19 year old Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown has announced her engagement to Jake Bongiovi with a beautiful Instagram picture of them both. Millie was first spotted with Jake, son of Jon Bon Jovi, in the summer of 2021, now fans are delighted at the news.
The engagement ring
We haven't seen a close up of Millie's engagement ring, but it looks like it's a cushion diamond with a halo of smaller diamonds. The central diamond could be around 3 carats, although it's difficult to tell from the pictures so far. Estimates of how much the ring is worth range from £70 000 to £250 000.
Like Millie, I also got engaged at 19 and whilst Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi have their critics, it's been the best thing for me so far. My now-husband also proposed with a diamond ring, albeit a much smaller one.
If you're getting engaged at a your age, a diamond is a good choice as an engagement ring stone. Going for a timeless design will compliment your style as it evolves in years to come. Diamonds are also particularly durable and can be reworked into a new design if you choose to do so in the future.
That's what I've been planning to do with my engagement ring for some time, but just like any jewellery designer will tell you, I rarely get the time to think about my own projects.
Getting engaged age 19
The average age for women to get engaged in the UK is 29, according to Hitched. For men the average age is 32. The average age to get married according to the National Office of Statistics is 31 for women and 33 for men.
I bucked the trend and got engaged at 19, the same age as Millie and married at 20. Whilst it certainly raised eyebrows as I cancelled my gap year travel plans and changed my university choice, we've now been together for 15 years.
In sickness and in health
My husband Paul and I have had our relationship strengthened in sickness and in health. He was even my full time carer for three years, when I was unable to care for myself because of narcolepsy and subsequent difficulties with medication.
Designing a bespoke engagement ring
Not everyone has the budget for a bespoke engagement ring at a young age (we certainly didn't when I was 19). However, it's never too late for a redesign.
